I know the economy is bad, but seriously?

I work in the paint department of a big box hardware store so I'm used to taking on multiple orders both small and quite large. I happened to be closing the department by myself and was hit with a big rush of customers after coming back from lunch. I was on my way up to the counter carrying 4 gallons to mix for a customer and saw more customers lining up around my desk. Not wanting to keep anyone waiting I quickly took everyone's order and got to work mixing all the paint. The last order I took was for a couple with their kids. They already seemed annoyed that I had not helped them first and didn't like that I told them it could take me up to 20 minutes to get their one gallon mixed. As I was mixing everything the wife was slightly leaned over my counter staring at me. After a few minutes of her staring at me, I asked them if there was anything else they needed to shop for or if they just wanted to walk around for a bit while I took care of everyone. This did not settle well with the wife and she said, "No, we just want our paint." I informed her that she was unnerving me by staring at me as I was working and tried once again to convince them to walk around. This only seemed to anger her more. "You don't need to be working here if you don't like to be stared at! If you hate your job so much, you need to find somewhere else to work!", this response caught me completely off guard. I told her quite calmly that I never said I didn't like my job. With that response, she sent her husband to the service desk and followed behind him. They proceeded to complain to the manager that I was rude, told them they needed to "go the fuck away" and that I should be immediately fired (they wrote this all on paper). I've never cussed toward a customer and while I do have a temper, I can control it at work. The manager approached me with the complaint but refused to believe my side of the story (he was just transfered into the store), until a regular customer of mine approached him to set things straight. Turns out the rude couple complain every time they shop at the store only because the husband was laid off and used to work for the company. They've been back once since that night and made it their mission to slowly walk by the paint desk while giving me nasty looks.
