I worked in a furniture store for a few years, and one ridiculously greedy customer argued that I should give him a discount on his $100 purchase. I told him that was not in my control, because the item was already on sale and I did not have the authority to cut the price any lower. He stormed out, calling me a stupid jerk. Then he came back with his whole family and argued with me some more, and his family stood there embarrassed by his behavior. He wanted the discount, I refused, and he stormed out again. Then he came back. This went on for the entire afternoon as he returned six times, dragging his kids along. Finally I said look, how about if I knock a dollar off the price for you? I’ll contribute my own dollar. I took four quarters from my pocket and put them on the counter. “Okay, great,” he says. He pays me $99 for a $100 purchase and leaves happy, with his family complaining to him that he wasted their entire Saturday afternoon. Some people really will chop off their own nose just to spite their face.
